In vertebrates, the gallbladder, also known as the cholecyst, is a small hollow organ where bile is stored and concentrated before it is released into the small intestine. In humans, the pear-shaped gallbladder lies beneath the liver, although the structure and position of the gallbladder can vary significantly among animal species. It receives bile, produced by the liver, via the common hepatic duct, and stores it. The bile is then released via the common bile duct into the duodenum, where the bile helps in the digestion of fats.

ಪಿತ್ತಕೋಶವು ಯಕೃತ್ತಿನ ಸ್ರಾವವಾದ ಪಿತ್ತ (ಬೈಲ್) ಸಂಗ್ರಹವಾಗುವ ಚೀಲ. ಇದು ಯಕೃತ್ತಿನ ಬಲಸಂಪುಟದ ಕೆಳಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಆಕಾರ ಶಂಖದಂತೆ. ಯಕೃತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನವಾಗುವ ಪಿತ್ತ ಅದರ ಎರಡೂ ಸಂಪುಟಗಳಿಂದ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ನಳಿಗೆಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಹರಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಇವೆರಡೂ ಸಂಗಮಿಸಿ ಯಕೃತ್ ಪ್ರಣಾಲಿ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಪಿತ್ತಕೋಶದ ನಳಿಗೆ ಯಕೃತ್ ಪ್ರಣಾಲಿಯನ್ನು ಸೇರಿ ಪಿತ್ತನಾಳ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಪಿತ್ತಕೋಶದ ಉದ್ದ 7-10 ಸೆಂ.ಮೀ.; ಮೊಂಡಾದ ಅದರ ತುದಿಯ ಕಡೆ ಅಗಲ ಸುಮಾರು 3 ಸೆಂ.ಮೀ. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು 30-50 ಘನ ಸೆಂ.ಮೀ. ಪಿತ್ತರಸ ಹಿಡಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಪಿತ್ತಕೋಶದ ಮೇಲಿನ ಹೊರಮೈ ಯಕೃತ್ತಿನ ಬಲಸಂಪುಟದ ಕೆಳಗಡೆ ಇರುವ ಕೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂಧಿತವಾಗಿದೆ. ಮೊಂಡಾದ ತುದಿ ಯಕೃತ್ತಿನ ಕೆಳಗಿನ ಅಂಚಿನಿಂದ ಮುಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಚಾಚಿಕೊಂಡು ಉದರ ಫಲಕವನ್ನು ಸ್ಪರ್ಶಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಪಿತ್ತಕೋಶದ ಕೆಳಗಿನ ಹೊರಮೈ ಮುಂಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ತಿರ್ಯಕ್ ಸ್ಥೂಲಾಂತ್ರಕ್ಕೂ ಹಿಂಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಗೃಹಿಣೀ (ಸುಶ್ರುತ) ಡುಯೋಡೀನಮ್ಮಿಗೂ ಬಂಧಿತವಾಗಿದೆ. ಪಿತ್ತಕೋಶ ನಳಿಗೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಪಿತ್ತ, ಪಿತ್ತಕೋಶವನ್ನು ಸೇರಿ ನೀರಿನಂಶವನ್ನು ಬಲುಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಮಂದವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಜೀರ್ಣಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಿತ್ತಕೋಶ ಸಂಕೋಚಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಗ ಪಿತ್ತ ಅದೇ ನಳಿಗೆ ಮೂಲಕ ಪಿತ್ತನಾಳಕ್ಕೆ ಹರಿದು ತನ್ಮೂಲಕ ಗ್ರಹಣೀ ಡುಯೋಡೀನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಸೇರುತ್ತದೆ.
