धूप NOUN

  1. देवपूजन में या सुगंध के लिये कपूर, आग, गुग्गुल, आदि गंधद्रव्यों को जलाकर उठाया हुआ धुआँ । सुगंधित धूम ।
  2. गंधद्रव्य जिसे जलाने से सुगंधित धुआँ उठता और फैलता है । जलाने पर महकवाली चीज । विशेष—धूप के लिये पाँच प्रकार के द्रव्यों में से किसी न किसी का व्यवहार होता है—(१) निर्यात अर्थात् गोंद । जैसे, गुग्गुल, राल । (२) चूर्ण । जैसे, जायफल का चूर्ण । (३) गंध । जैसे, कस्तूरी । (४) काष्ठ । जैसे, अगर की लकड़ी । (५) कृत्रिम अर्थात् कई द्रव्यों के योग के बनाई हुई धूप । कृत्रिम धूप कई प्रकार की होती है; जैसे, पंचांग धूप, अष्टांग धूप, दशांग धूप, द्वादशांग धूप, षोडशांग धूप । इनमें से दशांग धूप अधिक प्रसिद्ध है जिसमे दस चीजों का मेल होता है । ये इस चीजें क्या क्या होनी चाहिए इसमें मतभेद है । पद्यपुराण के अनुसार कपूर, कुष्ठ, अगर, चंदन, गुग्गुल, केसर, सुगंधबाला तेजपत्ता, खस और जायफल से दस चीजें होनी चाहिएँ । सारांश यह कि साल और सलई का गोंद, मैनसिल, अगर, देवदार, पद्याख, मोचरस, मोथा, जटामासी इत्यादि सुगंधित द्रव्य धूप देने के काम में आते हैं ।
  3. सूर्य का प्रकाश और ताप । घाम । आतप । जैसे,—धूप में मत निकलो ।

धूप सूर्यकिरणों से सीधे प्रकाश और गरमी को कहते हैं। इसके अंतर्गत विकिरण के दृश्य अंश ही नहीं आते, वरन् अदृश्य नीललोहित और अवरक्त किरणें (infrared) भी आती हैं। इसमें सूर्य की परावर्तित और प्रकीर्णित किरणें सम्मिलित नहीं हैं।
