गिलहरी NOUN
- एक प्रकार का छोटा जानवर जो एशिया, युरोप और उत्तरी अमेरिका में बहुत अधिकता से होता है । विशेष—गिलहरी की कई जातियाँ होती हैं और यह आकार में चुहे से लेकर बिल्ली तककी होती है यह प्रायः छोटे फल और दाने खाती है और पेड़ों पर रहती है । इसके कान लबे और नुकीले होते हैं और दुम घने और मुलायम रोयों से ढकी होती है । इसकी पीठ पर कई रंग की धारियाँ भी होती हैं । इसकी दुम के रोएँ से रंग भरने की कूँची बहुत अच्छी बनती है । यह बहुत चंचल होती है ओर बड़ी सरलता से पाली जा सकती है । यह अपने पिछले पैरों के सहारे बैठकर अगले पैरों से हाथों की तरह काम ले सकती है । इसकी चंचलका बहुत भली मालूम होती है । एक बार में यह तीन से चार तक बच्चे दे सकती है । इसे कहीं कहीं चिखुरी या गिलाई भी कहते हैं ।

गिलहरियाँ छोटे व मध्यम आकार के कृन्तक प्राणियों की विशाल परिवार की सदस्य है जिन्हें स्कियुरिडे कहा जाता है। इस परिवार में वृक्षारोही गिलहरियाँ, भू गिलहरियाँ, चिम्पुंक, मार्मोट, उड़न गिलहरी और प्रेइरी श्वान भी शामिल हैं। यह अमेरिका, यूरेशिया और अफ्रीका की मूल निवासी है और आस्ट्रेलिया में इन्हें दूसरी जगहों से लाया गया है। लगभग चालीस मिलियन साल पहले गिलहरियों को पहली बार, इयोसीन में साक्ष्यांकित किया गया था और यह जीवित प्रजातियों में से पर्वतीय ऊदबिलाव और डोरमाइस से निकट रूप से सम्बद्ध हैं।
