Description
कुछ या सभी भोजन, पेय या दोनों के लिये बिना कुछ अवधि तक रहना उपवास (Fasting) कहलाता है। उपवास पूर्ण या आंशिक हो सकता है। यह बहुत छोटी अवधि से लेकर महीनो तक का हो सकता है। उपवास के अनेक रूप हैं। धार्मिक एवं आध्यात्मिक साधना के रूप में प्रागैतिहासिक काल से ही उपवास का प्रचलन है।

From a purely physiological context, "fasting" may refer to the metabolic status of a person who has not eaten overnight, or to the metabolic state achieved after complete digestion and absorption of a meal. Metabolic changes in the fasting state begin after absorption of a meal.
