Jurisprudence is the philosophy and theory of law. It is concerned primarily with both what the law is and what it ought to be. That includes questions of how persons and social relations are understood in legal terms, and of the values in and of law. Work that is counted as jurisprudence is mostly philosophical, but it includes work that also belongs to other disciplines, such as sociology, history, politics and economics.

विधिशास्त्र या न्यायशास्त्र (अंग्रेज़ी-jurisprudence) या विधिक सिद्धान्त, विधि के औचित्य का सैद्धांतिक अध्ययन व दर्शन हैं। इसमें समस्त विधिक सिद्धान्त सम्मिलित हैं, जो कानून अथवा विधि व सन्नियम बनाते हैं। विधिशास्त्र के विद्वान, जिन्हें जूरिस्ट या विधिक सिद्धान्तकार भी कहा जाता हैं, विधि की प्रकृति को उसके सबसे सामान्य रूप में समझाने का प्रयास करते हैं और विधिक तर्कणा और सादृश्य, विधिक प्रणाली, विधिक संस्थानों और विधि का उचित अनुप्रयोग, विधि का आर्थिक विश्लेषण और समाज में विधि की भूमिका की गहरी व्याख्या व समझ प्राप्त करने का प्रयास करते हैं। न्यायशास्त्र के दार्शनिक स्वयं से ही प्रश्न करते रहते हैं - "नियम क्या है?" ; "क्या नियम होना चाहिये?"
