Cumin is a flowering plant in the family Apiaceae, native to the Irano-Turanian Region. Its seeds – each one contained within a fruit, which is dried – are used in the cuisines of many cultures in both whole and ground form. Although cumin is used in traditional medicine, there is no high-quality evidence that it is safe or effective as a therapeutic agent.

जीरा ऍपियेशी परिवार का एक पुष्पीय पौधा है। यह पूर्वी भूमध्य सागर से लेकर भारत तक के क्षेत्र का देशज है। इसके प्रत्येक फल में स्थित एक बीज वाले बीजों को सुखाकर बहुत से खानपान व्यंजनों में साबुत या पिसा हुआ मसाले के रूप में प्रयोग किया जाता है। यह दिखने में सौंफ की तरह होता है। संस्कृत में इसे जीरक कहा जाता है, जिसका अर्थ है, अन्न के जीर्ण होने में सहायता करने वाला।
