The falcons and caracaras are around 65 species of diurnal birds of prey that make up the family Falconidae. The family likely originated in South America during the Paleocene and is divided into three subfamilies: Herpetotherinae, which includes the laughing falcon and forest falcons; Polyborinae, which includes the spot-winged falconet and the caracaras; and Falconinae, the falcons and kestrels (Falco) and falconets (Microhierax).

फ़ैल्कोनीडाए (Falconidae) शिकारी पक्षियों का एक जीववैज्ञानिक कुल है जिसमें फ़ैल्कोनीनाए (Falconinae) और पोलीबोरिनाए (Polyborinae) के दो उपकुल सम्मिलित हैं। फ़ैल्कोनीनाए में श्येन, केस्ट्रेल और उनसे सम्बन्धित पक्षी आते हैं, जबकि पोलीबोरिनाए में काराकारा और वन श्येन से सम्बन्धित पक्षी शामिल हैं। कुल मिलाकर फ़ैल्कोनीडाए कुल में लगभग ६० जातियाँ सम्मिलित हैं। यह दिवाचरी होते हैं, यानि दिन से समय सक्रीय होते हैं। इनमें और ऐकीपिट्रीडाए गण के पक्षियों में एक अंतर यह है कि जहाँ ऐकीपिट्रीडाए अपने पंजो से अपने ग्रास को मारते हैं वहाँ फ़ैल्कोनीडाए जातियाँ अपनी चोंच से यह काम करती हैं।
