শিশু ভূমিষ্ঠকালীন ব্যক্তির প্রাথমিক রূপ। যে এখনও যৌবনপ্রাপ্ত হয় নাই কিংবা বয়ঃসন্ধিক্ষণে প্রবেশ করেনি সে শিশু হিসেবে সমাজ কিংবা রাষ্ট্রে চিহ্নিত হয়ে আছে। কখনো কখনো অনাগত সন্তান অর্থাৎ যে সন্তান এখনো ভূমিষ্ঠ হয় নাই বা মায়ের গর্ভে অবস্থান করছে সেও শিশুরূপে পরিগণিত হয়ে থাকে। একজন ব্যক্তি তার পিতা-মাতার কাছে সবসময়ই সন্তান বা শিশু হিসেবে চিহ্নিত হয়ে থাকেন। তবে, নির্দিষ্ট সময়, স্থান অথবা ঘটনার প্রেক্ষিতে শিশুসুলভ আচরণ বা ষাট বছরের শিশু শব্দগুচ্ছেরও প্রয়োগ হয়ে থাকে। জীববিজ্ঞানের ভাষায় - মনুষ্য সন্তানের জন্ম এবং বয়ঃসন্ধির মধ্যবর্তী পর্যায়ের রূপ হচ্ছে শিশু। চিকিৎসাশাস্ত্রের সংজ্ঞানুযায়ী মায়ের মাতৃগর্ভে ভ্রুণ আকারে অ-ভূমিষ্ঠ সন্তানই শিশু।
