মাতৃভাষা, প্রথম/প্রাথমিক ভাষা বা স্থানীয়/নিজস্ব ভাষা পরিভাষাটির সংজ্ঞা পুরোপুরি পরিষ্কার নয়। তবে মাতৃভাষা মানে মায়ের ভাষা, অথবা এমন কোন ভাষা যা শিশুর বিকাশের জন্য মায়ের মতই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। মানুষ যে ভাষায় কথা বলতে সবচেয়ে বেশি পারদর্শী, যে ভাষাটি সে তার পিতামাতা বা অভিভাবকের কাছ থেকে ছোটবেলায় শিখেছে ও ভাষাটি যে অঞ্চলে বহুল প্রচলিত, সে অঞ্চলের মানুষের মতই ভাষাটিতে কথা বলতে সক্ষম, তাকে সাধারণভাবে মাতৃভাষা বা প্রাথমিক ভাষা বলা হয়। ১৯৯৯ সালের ১৭ই নভেম্বর ইউনেস্কো ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারিকে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের স্বীকৃতি প্রদান করে।

A first language (L1), native language, native tongue, or mother tongue is the first language a person has been exposed to from birth or within the critical period. In some countries, the term native language or mother tongue refers to the language of one's ethnic group rather than the individual's actual first language. Generally, to state a language as a mother tongue, one must have full native fluency in that language.
