ജീവശാസ്ത്രം (jivasastram) - Meaning in English

ജീവനെക്കുറിച്ചും ജീവികളെക്കുറിച്ചും പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്ന ശാസ്ത്രശാഖയാണ് ജീവശാസ്ത്രം. ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ ബയോളജി (Biology) എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ജീവികളുടെ ഘടന, ധർമ്മം, വളർച്ച, ഉത്ഭവം, പരിണാമം, വർഗീകരണം തുടങ്ങിയ കാര്യങ്ങൾ ജീവശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെ പരിധിയിൽ വരുന്നു. വിവിധ ഉപവർഗ്ഗങ്ങളും വിഷയങ്ങളും അടങ്ങുന്ന ഒരു ബൃഹദ്ശാഖയാണ് ജീവശാസ്ത്രം. ഏറ്റവും സൂക്ഷ്മജീവി മുതൽ തിമിംഗിലങ്ങൾ വരെയുള്ള എല്ലാ ജന്തുക്കളിലും സെക്വയ വരെയുള്ള സസ്യങ്ങളിലും ജീവന്റെ തുടിപ്പുകൾ ഏകദേശം ഒരേ പ്രകാരത്തിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ഈ ജൈവഅടിസ്ഥാനം അവ പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് നിരന്തരമായി ജീവകോശങ്ങളിൽ നടക്കുന്ന ഉപാപചയപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളിലൂടെയാണ്. അതിനാൽ ജീവന്റെ അടയാളമായി ഉപാപചയപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളെ കണക്കാക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇത്തരം അടിസ്ഥാനസ്വഭാവവിശേഷതകൾ നിലനിർത്തിക്കൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ജീവികൾ കാലത്തിനും സ്ഥലത്തിനും അനുകൂലനപ്പെട്ട് പരിണമിക്കുകയും നിലനിൽക്കുകയും നശിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഉൽപ്പരിവർത്തനം പോലെയുള്ള ക്രോമസോം-ജീൻ ആകസ്മികവ്യതിയാനങ്ങൾ, ഒറ്റപ്പെടൽ എന്നിവ വഴി പുതിയ ഉപവർഗ്ഗങ്ങൾ രൂപപ്പെടുന്നു.
