चमगादड़ NOUN
- एक उड़नेवाला बड़ा जंतु जिसके चारों पैर परदार होते हैं । विशेष—यह जमीन पर अपने पैरों से चल फिर नहीं सकता, या तो हवा में उड़ता रहता है या किसी पेड़ की डाल में चिपटा रहता है । दिन के प्रकाश में यह बाहर नहीं निकलता, किसी अँधेरे स्थान में पैर ऊपर और सिर नीचे करके औधा लटका रहता है । इनके झुंड के झुंड पुराने खंडहरों आदि में लटके हुए पाए जाते हैं । इस जंतु के कान बड़े बड़े होते हैं और उनमें आहट पाने की बड़ी शक्ति होती है । यद्यपि यह जंतु हवा में बहुत ऊपर तक उड़ता है, पर उसमें चिड़ियों के लक्षण नहीं हैं । इसकी बनावट चुहे की सी होती है, इसे कान होते हैं और यह अंडा नहीं देता, बच्चा देता है । अगले पर बहुत लबे होते हैं और उनके छोटों के पास से पतली हड्डियों की तीलियाँ निकली होती हैं, जिनके बीच में झिल्ली मढ़ी होती है । यही झिल्ली पर का काम देती है । तोलियों के सहारे से यह जंतु झिल्ली को छाते की तरह फैलाता और बंद करता है । यह प्रायः कीडे़ मकोड़े और फल खाता है । चमगादड़ अनेक प्रकार के होते हैं । कुछ तो छोटे छोटे होते हैं और कुछ इतने बड़े होते हैं कि परों को दोनों ओर फैलाकर नापने से वे गज डेढ़ गज ठहरते हैं ।

चमगादड़ (Bat) आकाश में उड़ने वाला एक स्तनधारी प्राणी है, जो अपनी १००० से भी अधिक प्रजातियों के साथ स्तनधारियों के दूसरे सबसे बडे़ कुल का निर्माण करता है।
Bats are flying mammals of the order Chiroptera. With their forelimbs adapted as wings, they are the only mammals capable of true and sustained flight. Bats are more agile in flight than most birds, flying with their very long spread-out digits covered with a thin membrane or patagium. The smallest bat, and arguably the smallest extant mammal, is Kitti's hog-nosed bat, which is 29–34 millimetres in length, 150 mm (6 in) across the wings and 2–2.6 g in mass. The largest bats are the flying foxes, with the giant golden-crowned flying fox reaching a weight of 1.6 kg and having a wingspan of 1.7 m.
