लघुकथा एक छोटी कहानी नहीं है। यह कहानी का संक्षिप्त रूप भी नहीं है। यह विधा अपने एकांगी स्वरुप में किसी भी एक विषय, एक घटना या एक क्षण पर आधारित होती है। आधुनिक लघुकथा अपने पाठकों में चेतना जागृत करती है। यह किसी भी चुटकुले या व्यंग्य से भी पूरी तरह अलग है।
