Espionage, spying, or intelligence gathering is the act of obtaining secret or confidential information (intelligence). A person who commits espionage is called an espionage agent or spy. Any individual or spy ring, in the service of a government, company, criminal organization, or independent operation, can commit espionage. The practice is clandestine, as it is by definition unwelcome. In some circumstances, it may be a legal tool of law enforcement and in others, it may be illegal and punishable by law.

गुप्तचर्या या गुप्तचरी गुप्तचरों और भेदियों द्वारा किया जाता है। विशेषकर युद्धकाल में सब देश अपने भेदियों को भेजकर दूसरे देशों की सेना, सरकार, उत्पादन, वैज्ञानिक उन्नति आदि के तथ्यों के विषय में सूचना प्राप्त करने का प्रयत्न करते हैं। इसे चारवृत्ति, चर कार्य या गुप्तचरी या खुफियागिरी या जासूसी भी कहते हैं। गुप्तचर जो सूचना इकट्ठा करते हैं उसे आसूचना (इन्टेलिजेन्स) कहते हैं।
