सौम्य एवं सौम्या भारतीय नाम है। उत्तर एवं पूर्वी भारत में यह पुरुषवाचक रूप सौम्य में अधिक प्रयुक्त होता है और दक्षिण भारत में यह महिलासूचक रूप सौम्या में अधिक उपयोग होता है। सौम्य का मतलब कोमल, मुलायम, मृदुल है। सौम्य का अर्थ 'सोम के पुत्र' से भी है। संस्कृत में 'चन्द्र' को सोम कहा जाता है अतः इसका अर्ध चन्द्र का पुत्र 'बुध' होता है। लेकिन सौम्य का शब्दिक अर्थ शुभग्रह है।
