In general, incentives are anything that persuade a person or organization to alter their behavior to produce the desired outcome. The laws of economists and of behavior state that higher incentives amount to greater levels of effort and therefore higher levels of performance. For comparison, a disincentive is something that discourages from certain actions.

प्रोत्साहन (incentive) किसी व्यक्ति या समुदाय द्वारा किसी विशेष क्रिया करवाने के लिए अभिप्रेरण के रूप में दी जाने वाली किसी चीज़ को कहते हैं। उदाहरण के लिए व्यावसायिक संगठन अपने कर्मियों से काम लेने के लिए उन्हें प्रोत्साहन के लिए उन्हें आय देते हैं। हर बड़े संगठन या आर्थिक प्रणाली में ध्येयों को प्राप्त करने ले लिये उनमें प्रोत्साहनों का ढांचा बनाया जाता है। प्रोत्साहन प्रणाली बनाना व सुधारना प्रबन्धन में एक अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण क्रिया होती है।
