A brake is a mechanical device that inhibits motion by absorbing energy from a moving system. It is used for slowing or stopping a moving vehicle, wheel, axle, or to prevent its motion, most often accomplished by means of friction.

गति और त्वरण का अवरोध करने के लिए मुख्य यंत्र के साथ जो उपयंत्र लगाया जाता है, उसे ही रोधक या ब्रेक (Brake) कहते हैं। यंत्रविद्या में प्राकृतिक शक्तियों को नियोजित कर, इच्छित प्रकार की गति और त्वरण प्राप्त कर, उससे उपयोगी काम लेने से भी अधिक महत्व का काम इच्छित समय पर उचित प्रकार से उनकी गति और त्वरण का अवरोध करना है। सही काम करने की दृष्टि से और राजकीय नियमों के अनुसार सुरक्षा की दृष्टि से भी, प्रत्येक चलनेवाले यंत्र के साथ ब्रेक का होना आवश्यक है।
