स्वचालित गणक मशीन को आटोमेटिक बैंकिंग मशीन, कैश पाइंट, होल इन द वॉल, बैंनकोमैट जैसे नामों से यूरोप, अमेरिका व रूस आदि में जाना जाता है। यह मशीन एक ऐसा दूरसंचार नियंत्रित व कंप्यूटरीकृत उपकरण है जो ग्राहकों को वित्तीय हस्तांतरण से जुड़ी सेवाएं उपलब्ध कराता है। इस हस्तांतरण प्रक्रिया में ग्राहक को कैशियर, क्लर्क या बैंक टैलर की मदद की आवश्यकता नहीं होती है। खुदरा यानि रिटेल बैंकिंग के क्षेत्र में एटीएम बनाने का विचार समांनातर तौर जापान, स्वीडन, अमेरिका और इंग्लैंड में जन्मा और विकसित हुआ। हालांकि सबसे पहले इसका प्रयोग कहां शुरू हुआ यह अभी तय नहीं हो पाया है।
