ఇంగువ (Asafoetida) వంటలలో వాడే మంచి సుగంధ ద్రవ్యం, చాలా ఔషధ గుణాలున్న మొక్క. 'అస' అంటే పర్షియన్ లో జిగురు. 'ఫాటిడా' అంటే లాటిన్ లో ఘాటైన గంధక వాసన అని అర్ధం. దీనిని ఇండో-ఆర్యన్ భాషల్లో హింగ్, హీంగ్ అని పిలుస్తారు. పర్షియాకు స్థానికమైన ఇంగువ పచ్చిగా ఉన్నప్పుడు ఘాటైన గంధకపు వాసన కలిగి ఉంటుంది. వంటలలో వేసి ఉడికినప్పుడు ఒక విధమైన మసాలాదినుసుల వాసననిస్తుంది.

Ferula assa-foetida is a species of Ferula endemic to Southern Iran. It is a source of asafoetida, but not the main source, although many sources claim so. The production of asafoetida from this species is confined to Southern Iran, especially the area near Lar.
