అవసరంను ఆంగ్లంలో నీడ్ (Need) అంటారు. మొక్కలు, జంతువులు జీవించడానికి లేదా సంతోషంగా జీవించడానికి తప్పనిసరిగా కొన్ని వస్తువులు, సేవలు అవసరమవుతాయి. ఎటువంటి వస్తువులు, సేవలు లేకుండా మొక్కలైనా, జంతువులైనా జీవించడం సాధ్యం కాదు, ఈ అవసరమయిన వస్తువులను పిలుస్తారు కావలసినవి అని. అవసరానికి వ్యతిరేకం అనవసరం. ప్రతి వ్యక్తి శరీరానికి ఒకే విధమైన ప్రాథమిక అవసరాలను కలిగి ఉన్నాడు. మానవులు జీవించడానికి ముఖ్యంగా, కచ్చితంగా నీరు, ఆహారం, దుస్తులు,, ఆశ్రయం అవసరం. అవసరమయిన వాటిలో నీరు చాలా ముఖ్యమైనదిగా ఉంది. ఎందుకంటే తాగునీరు లేకుండా వ్యక్తి ఎక్కువ సమయం జీవించలేడు, త్వరగా మరణిస్తాడు కాబట్టి.

A need is dissatisfaction at a point of time and in a given context. Needs are distinguished from wants. In the case of a need, a deficiency causes a clear adverse outcome: a dysfunction or death. In other words, a need is something required for a safe, stable and healthy life while a want is a desire, wish or aspiration. When needs or wants are backed by purchasing power, they have the potential to become economic demands.
