Feathers are epidermal growths that form a distinctive outer covering, or plumage, on both avian (bird) and some non-avian dinosaurs and other archosaurs. They are the most complex integumentary structures found in vertebrates and a premier example of a complex evolutionary novelty. They are among the characteristics that distinguish the extant birds from other living groups.

ఈక బహువచనం ఈకలు పక్షుల బాహ్యచర్మము నుండి అభివృద్ధి చెంది, జీవి శరీరాన్ని కప్పుతూ బాహ్య అస్థిపంజరముగా ఏర్పడుతుంది. ఈకల అమరిక, విస్తరణను టెరిలాసిస్ (Pterylosis) అని అంటారు. రాటిటే లేదా ఎగరలేని పక్షులలో ఈకలు ఒకే రీతిలో విస్తరించి ఉంటాయి. కారినేటా లేదా ఎగిరే పక్షులలో ఈకలు క్రమ శ్రేణులలో అమరి ఉంటాయి. ఈ శ్రేణులను పిచ్ఛ ప్రదేశాలు (Pterylae) అని, వీటి మధ్యనున్న ఖాళీ స్థలాలను అపిచ్ఛక ప్రదేశాలు (Apterylae) అని అంటారు. మెలనిన్ (Melanin) వర్ణ పదార్ధము ఉండటము వలన ఈకలు వివిధ వర్ణాలలో ఉంటాయి.
