வேகம் அல்லது கதி (speed) என்பது இயக்க வீதம் அல்லது இடமாற்ற வீதம் எனலாம். இதைப் பொதுவாக ஓரலகு நேரத்தில் (t) சென்ற தூரம் (d) என வரையறுக்கலாம். வேகம், தூரம் / நேரம் என்னும் அலகில் அளக்கப்படும் ஒரு திசையிலிக் கணியம் ஆகும். கதிக்கு இணையான திசையன் (vector) கணியம் திசைவேகம் (velocity) ஆகும். வேகமும், திசைவேகமும் ஒரே அலகில் அளக்கப்பட்டாலும், திசைவேகத்துக்கு உள்ள திசை என்னும் கூறு வேகத்துக்கு இல்லை. எனவே கதி அல்லது வேகம் என்பது திசைவேகத்தின் எண்மதிப்பு எனலாம்.
