பொருளியல் கருத்துப்படி, ஒரு பண்டத்தை தனக்கு உடைமை ஆக்குவதற்கான விருப்பமும் அதற்குண்டான விலைக்கு பணம் செலுத்த இயலும் நுகர்வோரின் நிலை தேவை அல்லது கேள்வி (Demand) ஆகும். தேவை என்ற சொல் ஒரு பண்டம் அல்லது சேவையை குறிப்பிட்ட நேரத்தில் வாங்குவதற்கான விருப்பம் அல்லது ஆற்றலைக் குறிக்கும். நுகர்வோரின் வருவாயைப் பொருத்து விருப்பத்தின் அளவு மாறக்கூடியது என்றும் தேவையை வரையறுக்கலாம்.
