ഒരു പ്രത്യേകധർമം നിർവഹിക്കുന്ന വ്യതിരിക്ത ശരീരഭാഗമാണ് അവയവം. പരസ്പരബദ്ധമായ ഒരു പറ്റം കലകൾ (tissues) ചേർന്നതാണ് ഓരോ അവയവവും. ഒന്നോടൊന്നു കൂടിച്ചേരാതെ വേറിട്ടുനില്ക്കുന്നത് എന്നാണ് 'അവയവ' ശബ്ദത്തിന്റെ അർഥം. ജീവന്റെ എല്ലാ പ്രത്യേക സ്വഭാവങ്ങളും പ്രദർശിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഏറ്റവും ചെറിയ ഘടകമാണ് കോശം. ഒരേ ധർമമുള്ള കോശങ്ങളുടെ സമൂഹത്തെ കല എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നു. അവയവം എന്നത് കുറേക്കൂടി ബൃഹത്തായ ഒരു ഘടനാവിശേഷമാണ്. നഗ്നനേത്രങ്ങളാൽ കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്ന ഇത് രണ്ടോ അതിലധികമോ കലകൾ ചേർന്നുണ്ടാകുന്നു. ഒരു ശരീരധർമം നിർവഹിക്കാൻ സഹകരിച്ചു പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന ഒരുകൂട്ടം അവയവങ്ങളാണ് അവയവവ്യൂഹം എന്ന പേരിലറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഉദാഹരണത്തിന് അന്നനാളി, ആമാശയം, കരൾ തുടങ്ങിയ അവയവങ്ങൾ ചേർന്നു ദഹനേന്ദ്രിയവ്യൂഹം രൂപംകൊള്ളുന്നു. രക്തപര്യയനവ്യൂഹത്തിലെ അവയവങ്ങളാണ് ഹൃദയം, ധമനികൾ, സിരകൾ, കാപ്പിലറികൾ എന്നിവ. ഇല, തണ്ട്, വേര് എന്നിവ സസ്യങ്ങളുടെ വളർച്ചയ്ക്കാവശ്യമായ ശരീരഭാഗങ്ങളാണ്; പുഷ്പങ്ങൾ പ്രജനനാവയവങ്ങളും.

In a multicellular organism, an organ is a collection of tissues joined in a structural unit to serve a common function. In the hierarchy of life, an organ lies between tissue and an organ system. Tissues are formed from same type cells to act together in a function. Tissues of different types combine to form an organ which has a specific function. The intestinal wall for example is formed by epithelial tissue and smooth muscle tissue. Two or more organs working together in the execution of a specific body function form an organ system, also called a biological system or body system.
