शकुन NOUN
- किसी काम के समय दिखाई देनेवाले लक्षण जो उस काम के संबंद में शुभ या अशुभ माने जाते हैं । वे चिह्न आदि जो किसी काम के संबंद में शुभ या अशुभ माने जाते हैं । विशेष—प्रायः लोग कुछ घटनाओं को देखकर उनका शुभ या अशुभ फल होना मानते हैं, और उन घटानाओं को शकुन कहते हैं । जैसे,—कहीं जाते समय रास्ते में बिल्ली का रास्ता काट जाना अशुभ शकुन समझा जाता है और जलपूर्ण कलश या मृतक आदि का मिलना शुभ शकुन माना जाता है । इसी प्रकार अंगों का फड़कना, विशिष्ट पशुओं या पक्षियों आदि का बोलना या कुछ विशिष्ट वस्तुओं का दिखाई पड़ना भी शकुन समझा जाता है । हमारे यहाँ इस विषय का एक अलग शास्त्र ही बन गया है; और उसके अनुसार दही, घी, दुब, चंदन, शीशा, शंखमछली, देवमूर्ति, फल, फूल, पान, सोना, चाँदी, रत्न, वेश्या आदि का दिखाई पड़ना शुभ और साँप, चमड़ा, नमक, खाली बरतन आदि दिखाई पड़ना अशुभ समझा जाता है । प्रायः लोग अशुभ शकुन देखकर काम रोक या टाल देते हैं । साधाणतः बोलचाल में लोग शकुन से प्राय; शुभ शकुन का ही अभिप्राय लेते हैं; अशुभ शकुन को अपशकुन, असगुन कहते हैं ।
