फोनोग्राफ NOUN
- एक यंत्र जिसमें पूव में गाए हुए राग, कही हुई बातें ओर बजाए हुए बाजों के स्वर आदि चुड़ियों में भरे रहते हैं औऱ ज्यों के त्यों सुनाई पड़ते हैं । विशेष—यह संदुक के आकार का होता है । इसके भीतर चक्कर लगे रहते हैं जो चाबी देने से आपसे आप घुमने लगते है इसके बीच में एख खुँटी या धुरी होती है जिसकी एक नोक संदुक के ऊपर बीच में निकली रहती है । यत्र के दुसरे ओर किनारे पर एक परदा होता है जिसके छोर पर सुई लगी रहती है । इसी परदे पर बजाते समय एक चोंगा लगा दिया जाता है । चुड़ियाँ जिनपर गीत, राग या कही हुई बातें अंकित रहती हैं रोटी के आकार की होती है । उनपर मध्य से आरंभ करके परिधि तक गई महीन रेखाओं की कुंडलिया होती है । इन चुड़ियों में आवाज इस प्रकार अंकित की जाती या भरी जाती है—एक यंत्र होता है जिसके एक सिरे पर चोंगा और दुसरे सिरे पर सुई लगी रहती है । गाने, बजाने या बोलनेवाला चोंगे की ओर बैठकर गाता बजाता, या बोलता है । उस शब्द से वायु में लहरियाँ उत्पन्न होकर चोंगे के दुसरे सिरे पर की सुई को संचालित करती हैं । इसी समय चुड़ी भी घुमाई जाती है और उसपर बोले हुए शब्द, गाए हुए राग या बाजे की ध्वनि के कंपनचिह्न सुई द्वारा अंकित होते जाते हैं । जब फिर उसी प्रकार का शब्द सुनना होता है तब वही चुड़ी फोनग्राफ में संदुक के बीच में निकली हुई कील में लगा दी जाती है और किनारे के परदे में लगी सुई चुड़ी की पहली या आरंभ की रेखा पर लगा दी जाती है । कुंजी देने से भीतर के चक्कर घुमने लगते हैं जिससे चुड़ी कील के सहारे नाचती है और सुई लकीरों पर घुमकर चोंगे में उसी प्रकार के वायुतरंग उत्पन्न करती है जिस प्रकार के चुड़ी में अकित हुए थे । ये ही वायुतरंग उस कल में लगे हुए पुर्जों को हिलाते हैं जिससे चोंगे में से होकर चुड़ी में भरे हुए शब्दों या स्वरों की प्रति- ध्वनि सुनाई देती है । यह ध्वनि कुछ धीमी होती है और धातु की झनझनाहट और सुई की खरखराहट के कारण कुछ दुषित हो जाती है । फिर भी सुननेवाले को पूर्व के शब्दों और स्वरों का बोध पूरा पूरा होता है । फोनोग्राफ में स्वरों का उच्चारण व्यंजनों की अपेक्षा अधिक स्पष्ट होता है और व्यंजनों में 'स' और 'ज' का उच्चारण इतना अस्फष्ट होता है कि उनमें कम भेद जान पड़ता है । शेष व्यंजन कुछ स्पष्ट होने पर भी अपना बोध कराने के लिये पर्याप्त होते हैं । इस यत्र के आविष्कारक अमेरिका के प्रसिद्ध वैज्ञानिक ऐडिसन साहब थे ।

फोनोग्राफ ध्वनि के अभिलेखन के लिए काम में लिया जाने वाला एक उपकरण है जिसका आविष्कार १८७७ में हुआ। वर्तमान में इसे ग्रामोफोन अथवा रिकॉर्ड प्लेयर के रूप में भी जाना जाता है। इसका आविष्कार थॉमस एडीसन ने किया था।
A phonograph, later called a gramophone, and since the 1940s a record player, or more recently a turntable, is a device for the mechanical and analogue reproduction of recorded sound. The sound vibration waveforms are recorded as corresponding physical deviations of a spiral groove engraved, etched, incised, or impressed into the surface of a rotating cylinder or disc, called a "record". To recreate the sound, the surface is similarly rotated while a playback stylus traces the groove and is therefore vibrated by it, very faintly reproducing the recorded sound. In early acoustic phonographs, the stylus vibrated a diaphragm which produced sound waves which were coupled to the open air through a flaring horn, or directly to the listener's ears through stethoscope-type earphones.
