दुनिया में पहला व्यावहारिक रूप से सफल पैराशूट बनाने का श्रेय फ्रांसीसी नागरिक लुइ सेबास्तियन लेनोर्मां को जाता है, जिन्होंने वर्ष १७८३ में इसका पहली बार सार्वजनिक प्रदर्शन किया था। हालांकि पंद्रहवीं सदी के दौरान लिओनार्दो दा विंची ने सबसे पहले पैराशूट की कल्पना करते हुए इसका रेखाचित्र भी तैयार किया था। दा विंची की इस डिजाइन से प्रेरणा लेकर फॉस्ट ब्रांसिस ने वर्ष १६१७ में एक सख्त फ्रेम वाला पैराशूट पहनकर वेनिस टॉवर से छलांग लगाई थी। उन्होंने अपने इस पैराशूट को होमो वोलंस नाम दिया था। हालांकि आपातकाल में पैराशूट के इस्तेमाल का पहला प्रयोग १७८५ में फ्रांसीसी नागरिक ज्यां पियरे ब्लांचार्ड ने किया था, जिन्होंने ऊंचाई पर तैर रहे एक हॉट एयर बैलून से एक कुत्ते को पैराशूट बंधी टोकरी के जरिए नीचे गिराया था। ब्लांचार्ड ने ही पहली बार सिल्क के कपड़े से तह करने लायक पैराशूट तैयार किया था। इसे इस्तेमाल करना भी आसान था। १७९७ में फ्रांस के आंद्रे गार्नेरिन ने पहली बार इसी तरह के पैराशूट के जरिए सफल जंप को अंजाम दिया था। गार्नेरिन ने कंपन कम करने के इरादे से इसमें कुछ और सुधार किया और इस तरह पहला छिद्रित पैराशूट अस्तित्व में आया।
