नामकरण NOUN
- नाम रखने का काम । पहचान के लिये नाम निश्चित करने की क्रिया ।
- हिंदुओं के सोलह संस्कारों में से एक जिसमें बच्चो का नाम रखा जाता है । विशेष—यह पाँचवाँ संस्कार है । जन्म से ग्यारहवें था बारहवें दिन बच्चे का नामकरण संस्कार होना चाहिए । ग्यारहवाँ दिन इसके लिये बहुत अच्छा है, यदि ग्यारहवें दिन न हो सके तो बारहवें दिन होना चाहिए । गोभिल गृह्यसूत्र में ऐसी ही व्यवस्था है । स्मृतियों में वर्ण के अनुसार व्यवस्था मिलती है, जैसे क्षत्रिय के लिये तेरहवें दिन, वैश्य के लिये सोलहवें दिन और शूद्र के लिये बाईसवें दिन । गोभिल गृह्यसूत्र मेंनामकरण का विधान इस प्रकार है : बच्चे को अच्छे कपड़े पहनाकर माता वाम भाग में बैठे हुए पिता की गोद में दे । फिर उसकी पीठ की ओर से परिक्रमा करती हुई उसके सामने आकर खड़ी हो । इसके अनंतर पति वेदमंत्र का पाठ करके बच्चे को फिर अपनी पत्नी की गोद में दे दे । फिर होम आदि करके नाम रखा जाय । नामकरण पद्धति में यह विधान, इस रूप में हो गया हैः नामकरण के दिन पिता गौरी, षोडशमात्रिका आदि का पूजन और वृद्धिश्राद्ध करके अपनी पत्नी को वाम भाग में बैठावे, फिर पत्थर की पटरी पर दो रेखाएँ खींचे, फिर दीपक जलाकर यदि लड़का हो तो उसके दाहिने कान के पास 'अमुक देव शर्मा' इत्यादि और लड़की हो तो 'अमुक देवी' इत्यादि कहकर नामकरण करे । नाम के अंत में यदि ब्राह्मण हो तो शर्मा और देव, क्षत्रिय हो तो वर्मा या त्राता, वैश्य हो तो भूमि या गुप्त, और शूद्र हो तो दास होना चाहिए । पारस्कर गृह्यसूत्र के अनुसार पुरुष का नाम तद्धितांत न होना चाहिए, पर स्त्री का नाम यदि ताद्धितांत हो तो उतना दोष नहीं, जैसे, गांधारी कैकेयी ।
