जमींदार NOUN
- जमीन का मालिक । भूमि का स्वामी । विशेष—मुसलमानों के राजत्वकाल में जो मनुष्य किसी छाट प्रांत, जिले या कुछ गावों का भूमिकर लगाने और सरकारी खजाने में जमा करने के लिये नियुक्त होता था, वह जमींदार कहलाता था और उसे उगाहे हुए कर का दसवाँ भाग पुरस्कार स्वरूप दिया जाता था । पर, जब अंत में मुसलमान शासक कमजोर हो गए तब वे जमींदार अपने अपने प्रांतों के स्वतंत्र रूप से प्रायः मलिक बन गए । अंगरेजी राज्य में जमीदार लोग अपनी अपनी भूमि के पूरे पूरे मालिक समझे जाते थे और जमींदारी पैतृक होती थी । ये सरकार को कुछ निश्चित वार्षिक कर देते थे और अपनी जमीदारी का संपत्ति की भाँति जिस प्रकार चाहें, उपयोग कर सकते थे । काश्तकारों आदि को कुछ विशिष्ट नियमों के अनुसार वे अपनी जमीन स्वयं ही जोतने बोने आदि के लिये देते थे और उनसे लगान आदिलेते थे । भारत के स्वतंत्र हो जाने पर लोकतांत्रिक सरकार ने जमींदारी प्रथा का वैधानिक उंन्मूलन कर दिया है ।

जमींदारी प्रथा भारत में मुगल काल एवं ब्रिटिश काल में प्रचलित एक राजनैतिक-सामाजिक प्रथा थी जिसमें भूमि का स्वामित्व उस पर काम करने वालों का न होकर किसी और (जमींदार) का होता था जो खेती करने वालों से कर वसूलते थे। भारत के स्वतंत्र होने के बाद यह प्रथा समाप्त कर गई। राजस्थान के रियासतकालीन इतिहास में जमींदारों के लिए चाकर शब्द का प्रयोग किया जाता था, चूंकि प्रत्येक जमींदार /सामंत को चाकरी की सेवा या चाकरी कर शासक को देना होता था।
