  1. चूअना जिसमें किसी चीज के चूने योग्य छेद या दरज हो । जैसे,—चूना घड़ा, चूना घर ।

चूना NOUN

  1. एक प्रकार का तीक्ष्ण क्षार भस्म जो पत्थर, कंकड, मिट्टी, सीप, शंख या मोती आदि पदार्थों को भट्ठइयों में फूँककर बनाया जाता है । विशेष—तुरंत फूँककर तैयार किए हुए चूने को कली या बिना बुझा हुआ चूना कहते हैं । यह ढोंके या उसी स्वरूप में होता है जिसमें उसका मूल पदार्थ फूँके जाने से पहले रहता है । कंकड़ का बिना बुझा चूना 'बरी' कहलाता है । बिना बुझा चूना हवा लगने से अपनी शक्ति और गुण के अनुसार तुरंत या कुछ समय में चूर्ण के रूप में हो जाता है और उसकी शक्ति और गुण में कमी होने लगती है । पर पानी के संयोग से बिना बुझे चूने की यह दशा बहुत जल्दी हो जाती है । उस अवस्था में उसे 'भरका' या बुझा हुआ चूना कहते हैं । बिना बुझे चूने पर जब पानी डाला जाता है, तब पहले तो वह पानी को खूब सोखता है, पर थोड़ी ही देर बाद उसमें से बुलबुले छूटने लगते हैं और बहुत तेज गरमी निकलती है । तेज चूने के संयोग से शरीर चर्राने लगता है और उसमें कभी कभी छाले तक पड़ जाते है । पत्थर का चूना बहुत तेज होता है और मकान की दीवारों पर सफेदी करने, खेत में खाद की तरह डालने, छींट आदि छापने, पान के साथ लगाकर खाने और दवाओं आदि के काम में आता है । कंकड़ का चूना भी प्रायः इन्हीं कामों में आता है; पर इसका सबसे अधिक उपयोग इमारत के काम में, ईंट पत्थर आदि जोड़ने और दीवारों पर पलस्तर करने के लिये होता है । शंख, सीप और मोती आदि का चूना प्रायः खाने और औषध के काम में ही आता है ।

  2. किसी चीज में ऐसा छेद या दरज हो जाना जिसमें से होकर कोई द्रव पदार्थ बूँद बूँद गिरे । जैसे, छत चूना, लोटा चूना, पीपा चूना आदि ।
