अप्रधान धातु जो या तो लोहे, ताँबे आदि धातुओं के विकार या मैल हैं या उनके योग से बनी हैं अथवा स्वतंत्र खानें से निकलती हैं । विशेष—प्रधान धातुओं के समान उपधातु भी सात गिनाई गई है—सेनामक्खी, रूपामाखी, तूतिया, काँसा, मुर्दासंख, सिंदूर शिलाजतु या गेरू (भावप्रकाश) पर किसी किसी के मत से सात उपधातु ये हैं—सेनामाखी, नीलाथोथा, हरताल, सुरमा, अबरक, मेनसिल और खपरिया ।
शरीर के रस, रक्त आदि सात धातुओं से बने हुए दूध, चरबी, पसीना आदि पदार्थ ।

वे तत्व जिनमें धातु तथा अधातु के गुण पाये जाते हैं उन्हें उपधातु कहते हैं जैसे कार्बन, बोरान आदि।
