ईथर NOUN

एक प्रकार का अति सूक्ष्म और लचीला द्रव्य या पदार्थ जो समस्त शून्य स्थल में व्य़ाप्त है । यह अत्यंत घन पदार्थों के परमाणु के बीच में भी व्य़ाप्त रहता है । उष्णता और प्रकाश का संचार इसी के द्वारा होता है ।
एक रासायनिक द्रव पदार्थ जो अलकोहल और गंधक के तेजाब से बनता है । विशेष—बोतल में अलकोहल और गंधक का तेजाब बराबर मात्रा में मिलाकर भरते हैं । फिर आंच द्वारा उसे दूसरी बोतल में टपका लेते हैं; जो ईथर कहलाता है । यह बहुत शीघ्र जलनेवाला पदार्थ है । खुला रखा रहने से यह बहुत जल्द उड़ जाता है और बहुत शीत पैदा करता है; इसलिये बरफ जमाने में काम आता है । रासायनिक क्रियाओं में इससे बडे़ बडे़ कार्य होते हैं । सूँघने से यह थोडी बेहोशी पैदा करता है तथा क्लोरोफार्मं की जगह भी काम में लाया जाता है । यह जरमनी में बहुत ज्यादा बनता है ।

ईथर का सामान्य सूत्र R-O-R होता है। ईथर में दो कार्बन परमाणु एक ऑक्सिजन परमाणु द्वारा संयोजित रहते हैं। एल्किल समूह के आधार पर ईथर दो प्रकार के होते है - 1॰ सममित ईथर 2। असममित ईथर

1। सममित ईथर - जब ऑक्सीज़न परमाणु के दोनों ओर कार्बन परमाणु समान हो तथा एल्किल समूह भी समान हो तो एसे ईथर, सममित ईथर कहलाते हैं। 
जैसे-CH₃-O-CH₃ एक सममित ईथर है। 
2। असममित ईथर - जब ऑक्सीज़न परमाणु के दोनों ओर एल्किल समूह असमान हो तो एसे ईथर, असममित ईथर कहलाते हैं। 
जैसे - CH₃-CH₂-O-CH₃ एक असममित ईथर है।

They have the general formula R−O−R′, where R and R′ represent organyl groups. Ethers can again be classified into two varieties: if the organyl groups are the same on both sides of the oxygen atom, then it is a simple or symmetrical ether, whereas if they are different, the ethers are called mixed or unsymmetrical ethers. A typical example of the first group is the solvent and anaesthetic diethyl ether, commonly referred to simply as "ether". Ethers are common in organic chemistry and even more prevalent in biochemistry, as they are common linkages in carbohydrates and lignin.
