1. एक बहुँत ऊँचा पेड़ जो हिमालय पर भूटान से लेकर कश्मीर और आफगानि- स्तान तक होता है । विशेष—खासिया की पहाड़ियों तथा अन्य स्थानों पर भी यह लगाया याता है । इसकी लकड़ी बहुत ही अच्छी, मजबुत और भूरे रंग की हती है और उसपर बहुत सुँदर धारियाँ पड़ी होती है । इसकी मेज, कुरसी, बंदूक के कुंदे, संदूक आदि बनते है । इसकी छाल रंगने और दवा के काम में भी आती है । इसका फल अंड़ाकार, बहेड़े के समान होता है । सूखने पर इसका छिलका बहुत कड़ा हो जाता है जिसके भीतर से टेड़ा मेड़ा गूदा व मीठी गरी निकलती है । गदे में तेल भी बहुत निकलता है । ड़ंठल और पत्तियों को गाय बैल खाता है । अखरोट बहुत गर्म होता है ।

Description

अखरोट पतझड़ करने वाले बहुत सुन्दर और सुगन्धित पेड़ होते हैं। इसकी दो जातियां पाई जाती हैं। 'जंगली अखरोट' 100 से 200 फीट तक ऊंचे, अपने आप उगते हैं। इसके फल का छिलका मोटा होता है। 'कृषिजन्य अखरोट' 40 से 90 फुट तक ऊंचा होता है और इसके फलों का छिलका पतला होता है। इसे 'कागजी अखरोट' कहते हैं। इससे बन्दूकों के कुन्दे बनाये जाते हैं।
