फकीर अरबी भाषा के शब्द फक़्र (فقر) से बना है जिसका अर्थ होता गरीब। इस्लाम में सूफी सन्तों को इसीलिये फकीर कहा जाता था क्योंकि वे गरीबी और कष्टपूर्ण जीवन जीते हुए दरवेश के रूप में आम लोगों की बेहतरी की दुआ माँगने और उसके माध्यम से इस्लाम पन्थ के प्रचार करने का कार्य मध्य पूर्व और दक्षिण एशिया में किया करते थे।
