  1. गिरा हुआ । ऊपर से नीचे आया हुआ ।
  2. आचार, नीति या धर्म से गिरा हुआ । आचारच्युत । नीतिभ्रष्ट या धर्मत्यागी ।
  3. महापापी । अतिपातकी । नरकदायक पाप का कर्ता ।
  4. जाति से निकाला हुआ । समाज द्वारा बहिष्कृत । जातिच्युत । जाति या समाज से खारिज । विशेष—हिंदू धर्मशास्त्रों के अनुसार आपदकाल न होने पर भी स्वधर्म के नियमों का उल्लंघन करनेवाला पतित होता है । आग लगनेवाला, विष देनेवाला, दूसरे का अपकार करने की नीयत से फाँसी लगाकर, ड़ूबकर या जलकर मर जानेवावा, ब्रह्महत्याकारी, सुरा पान करनेवाला, गुरुपत्नी- गामी, नास्तिक, चोर, मद्यप, चांडाल स्त्री से मैखुन करने अथवा चांड़ाल का दान लेने या अन्न खानेवाला ब्राह्मण तथा किसी अन्य महा या अतिपातक का कर्ता पतित माना जाता है । शुद्धितत्व के अनुसार पतित का दाह, अंत्येष्टक्रिया, अस्थिसंचय, श्राद्ध यहाँ तक की उसके लिये आँसू बहाना तक अकर्तव्य है । पतित का संसर्ग, उसके साथ भोजन, शयन या बातचित करनेवाला भी पतित होता है । पर पतितसंसर्ग के कारण पतित व्यक्ति का श्राद्ध, तर्पण आदि निषिद्ध नहीं है । माता के अतिरिक्त अन्य सव व्यक्ति पतित दशा में त्याज्य हैं । गर्भधारण और पोषण के कारण माता किसी दशा में त्याज्य नहीं है । प्रायश्चित्त करने से पतित व्यक्ति की शुद्धि होती है ।
  5. अत्यंत मलीन । महा अपावन ।
  6. युद्धादि में पराजित या हारा हुआ ।
  7. अति नीच । अधम ।
