दिवाला NOUN
- वह अवस्था जिसमें मनुष्य के पास अपना ऋण चुकाने के लिये कुछ न रह जाय । पूँजी या आय न रह जाने के कारण ऋण चुकाने में असमर्थता । कर्ज न चुका सकना । टाट उलटना । विशेष—जब किसी मनुष्य को व्यापार आदि में बहुत घाटा आता है अथवा उसका ऋण बहुत बढ़ जाता है और वह उस ऋण के चुकाने में अपनी असमर्थता प्रकट करता है तब उसका दिवाला होना मान लिया जाता है । इस देश में प्राचीन काल में अपनी यह असमर्थता प्रकट करने के लिये ऋणि व्यापारी अपनी दूकान का टाट उलट देते थे और उसपर एक चौमुखा दीया जला देते थे जिससे लोग समझ लेते थे कि अब इनके पास कुछ भी धन नहीं बचा और इनका दिवाला हो गया । इसी दिया बालने (जलने) से 'दिवाला' शब्द बना है । राजस्थान में पहले दूकान पर उलटा ताला लगा देते थे । आजकल प्राय? सभी सभ्य देशों में दिवाले के संबंध में कुछ कानून बन गए हैं जिनके अनुसार वह मनुष्य जो अपना बढ़ा हुआ ऋण चुकाने में असमर्थ होता है, किसी निश्चित न्यायालय में जाकर अपने दिवाले की दरखास्त देता है और वह बतला देता है कि मुझे बाजार का कितना देना है और इस समय मेरे पास कितना धन या संपत्ति है । इसपर न्यायालय की ओर से एक मनुष्य, विशेषत; वकील या और कोई कानून जाननेवाला नियुक्त कर दिया जाता है जो उसकी बची हुई सारी संपत्ति नीलाम करके और उसका सारा लहना वसूल करके हिस्से के मुताबिक उसका सारा कर्ज चुका देता है । ऐसी दशा में मनुष्य को अपने ऋण के लिये जेल जाने की आवश्यकता नहीं रह जाती ।
- किसी पदार्थ का बिलकुल न रह जाना । जैसे, ज्यौनारवाले दिन उनके यहाँ पूरियों का दिवाला हो गया ।

जब कोई व्यक्ति या संस्था कानूनी रूप से घोषणा करती है कि वह अपने द्वारा लिये गये ऋण को चुकाने में असमर्थ है तो इसे दिवाला (bankruptcy) कहते हैं तथा उस व्यक्ति/संस्था को दिवालिया (bankrupt) कहा जाता है। कुछ स्थितियों में स्वयं ऋणदाता (creditors) ही अपने ऋणी को दिवालिया घोषित करने की कानूनी प्रक्रिया आरम्भ करते हैं।
