ज्वार NOUN
- एक प्रकार की घास जिसकी बाल के दाने मोटे अनाजों में गिने जाते हैं । विशेष—यह अनाज संसार के बहुत से भागों में होता है । भारत, चीन, अरब, अफ्रीका, अमेरिका आदि में इसकी खेती होती है । ज्वार सूखे स्थानों में अधिक होती है, सीड़ लिए हुए स्थानों में उतनी नहीं हो सकती । भारत में राज- पूताना, पंजाब आदि में इसका ब्यवहार बहुत अधिक होता है । बंगाल, मद्रास, बरमा आदि में ज्वार बहुत कम बोई जाती है । यदि बोई भी जाती है तो दाने अच्छे नहीं पडते । इसका पौधा नरकट की तरह एक डंठल के रूप में सीधा५—६ हाथ ऊँचा जाता है । डठल में सात सात आठ आठ अंगुल पर गाँठें होती हैं जिनसे हाथ डेढ़ हाथ लंबे तलवार के आकार के पत्ते दोनों ओर निकलते हैं । इसके सिरे पर फूल के जीरे और सफेद दानों के गुच्छे लगते हैं । ये दाने छोटे छोटे होते हैं और गेहूँ की तरह खाने के काम में आते हैं । ज्वार कई प्रकार की होती है जिनके पौधों में कोई विशेष भेद नहीं दिखाई पड़ता । ज्वार की फसल दो प्रकार की होती है, एक रबी, दूसरी खरीफ । मक्का भी इसी का एक भेद है । इसी से कहीं कहीं मक्का भी ज्वार ही कहलता है । ज्वार को जोन्हरी, जुंडी आदि भी कहते हैं । इसके डंठल और पौधे को चारे के काम में लाते हैं और चरी कहते हैं । इस अन्न के उत्पत्तिस्थान के संबंध में मतभेद है । कोई कोई इसे अरब आदि पश्चिमी देशों से आया हुआ मानते हैं और 'ज्वार' शब्द को अरबी 'दूरा' से बना हुआ मानते हैं, पर यह मत ठीक नहीं जान पड़ता । ज्वार की खेती भारत में बहुत प्राचीन काल से होती आई है । पर यह चारे के लिये बोई जाती थी, अन्न के लिये नहीं ।

ज्वार एक प्रमुख फसल है। ज्वार कम वर्षा वाले क्षेत्र में अनाज तथा चारा दोनों के लिए बोई जाती हैं। ज्वार जानवरों का महत्वपूर्ण एवं पौष्टिक चारा हैं। भारत में यह फसल लगभग सवा चार करोड़ एकड़ भूमि में बोई जाती है। यह खरीफ की मुख्य फसलों में है। यह एक प्रकार की घास है जिसकी बाली के दाने मोटे अनाजों में गिने जाते हैं।
