बौद्ध दर्शन के अनुसार आलंबन छह होते हैं - रूप, शब्द, गंध, रस, स्पर्श और धर्म। इन छह के ही आधार पर हमारे चित्त की सारी प्रवृत्तियां उठती हैं और उन्हीं के सहारे चित्त चैत्तसिक संभव होते हैं। ये आलंबन चक्षु आदि इंद्रियों से गृहीत होते हैं। प्राणी के मरणासन्न अंतिम चित्तक्षण में जो स्वप्न छायावत्‌ आलंबन प्रकट होता है उसी के आधार पर मरणांतर दूसरे जन्म में प्रथम चित्तक्षण उत्पन्न होता है। इस तरह, चित्त कभी निरालंब नहीं रहता।

Ālambana (Sanskrit:आलम्बन), is a Sanskrit term which variously means – support, foundation, supporting, base, sustaining, cause, reason, basis, or the five attributes of things, or the silent repetition of a prayer, or the natural and necessary connection of a sensation with the cause which excites it, or the mental exercise practiced by the yogis in endeavouring to realize the gross form of the Eternal.
