தாம்பூலம் என்பது வெற்றிலை (betel leaf) மற்றும் பாக்கு (கமுகு) (areca nut) சேர்ந்திருப்பதைக் குறிக்கிறது. தாம்பூலம் எனும் சொல் டிம்பெல் (timbel) எனும் மலாய் மொழிச் சொல்லடியாகப் பிறந்ததாகும். தாம்பூலம் தரித்தல், தாம்பூலம் போடுதல், நிச்சய தாம்பூலம் ஆகியவை இச்சொல் வழியாகப் பிறந்த கூட்டுச் சொற்களாகும். விருந்தினர்கள் உணவருந்திய பின்னர் தாம்பூலம் தருவதும் இறை வழிபாட்டிலும் இது இன்றி‌யமையாத இடத்தைப் பெறுகிறது. இந்து மதத்தில் பெரும்பாலான சடங்குகளில் தாம்பூலம் இடம்பெறுகிறது. திருமணம் போன்ற நிகழ்வுகளுக்கு தாம்பூலம் அளித்து அழைப்பதும், நிகழ்வுக்கு வந்தவர்களுக்கு தாம்பூலத்தை அளிப்பதும் வழக்கம். தாம்பூலம் மற்றும் தேங்காய் போன்றவற்றை வைத்துத் தரும் பையை தாம்பூலப் பை என்றும், தாம்பூலம் வைத்துத் தரும் குறிப்பிட்ட வடிவத் தட்டு தாம்பூலத் தட்டு அல்லது தாம்பாளத் தட்டு எனப் பெயர் பெற்றது.

Betel nut chewing, also called betel quid chewing or areca nut chewing, is a practice in which areca nuts are chewed together with slaked lime and betel leaves for their stimulant and narcotic effects, the primary psychoactive compound being arecoline. The practice is widespread in Southeast Asia, Micronesia, Island Melanesia, and South Asia. It is also found among both Han Chinese immigrants and indigenous peoples of Taiwan, Madagascar, and parts of southern China. It was introduced to the Caribbean in colonial times.
