Poetry, also called verse, is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and often rhythmic qualities of language − such as phonaesthetics, sound symbolism, and metre − to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, a prosaic ostensible meaning. A poem is a literary composition, written by a poet, using this principle.

ਕਵਿਤਾ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਵੀ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਮ ਅਰਥਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਅਰਥ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕਾਵਿਕ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਦੂਜੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਵਿਤਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਕਲਾਤਮਕ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਜਨ ਲਈ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਸੁਹਜਾਤਮਕ ਅਤੇ ਲੈਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਕਵਿਤਾ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਖਿਆਲ, ਭਾਵ, ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼, ਅਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਧੁਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
