An intellectual is a person who engages in critical thinking, research, and reflection about the reality of society, and who proposes solutions for its normative problems. Coming from the world of culture, either as a creator or as a mediator, the intellectual participates in politics, either to defend a concrete proposition or to denounce an injustice, usually by either rejecting, producing or extending an ideology, and by defending a system of values.

ਚਿੰਤਕ ਉਸ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਰਗਰਮੀ ਦਾ ਉਘੜਵਾਂ ਲੱਛਣ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬੌਧਿਕ ਸਰਗਰਮੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਬੌਧਿਕ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਅਪਣਾ ਕੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੌਲਿਕ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਿਰਮਾਣ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਨਿਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਮਾਜ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰੀ ਨਜ਼ਰੀਏ ਤੋਂ "ਬੁੱਧੀਜੀਵੀ", "ਵਿਦਵਾਨ" ਤੋਂ ਉਲਟ, ਇੱਕ ਸਿਰਜਣਾਤਮਕ ਸਮਾਜਿਕ ਕਰਤਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਸਚਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਨੈਤਿਕਤਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਅਮੂਰਤੀਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਲੱਗਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਬੌਧਿਕ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਰਜਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਸਮਾਜਾਂ ਲਈ ਨਿਯਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਕਦਰਾਂ ਕੀਮਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
