A commissioner is, in principle, a member of a commission or an individual who has been given a commission.
भारतीय प्रशासकीय सेवेतील वरिष्ठ सनदी अधिकाऱ्यांना आयुक्त असे म्हणतात. ब्रिटिश भारतीय गव्हर्नर जनरल लॉर्ड विल्यम बेंटिंग यांना आयुक्त पदाचा जनक असे म्हणतात. भारतीय प्रशासकीय सेवेतील सनदी अधिकारी हे श्रेणी-१ व श्रेणी - २ मध्ये समाविष्ट असतात. त्यामुळे अप्पर आयुक्त आणि सहाय्यक आयुक्त असे दोन प्रकार असतात. "अप्पर आयुक्त" पदावर नियुक्ती होण्यासाठी केंद्रीय लोकसेवा आयोग (UPSC) भारतीय नागरी सेवा परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण होणे गरजेचे असते. तसेच "सहाय्यक आयुक्त" पदावर नियुक्ती होण्यासाठी महाराष्ट्र लोकसेवा आयोग (MPSC) राज्य नागरी सेवा परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण होणे गरजेचे असते. राज्य सरकारकडून राज्य प्रशासकीय अधिकारी गट अ (राजपत्रित) श्रेणी-१ मधून अप्पर आयुक्त पदावर कनिष्ठ राजपत्रित. अधिकाऱ्यांची नियुक्ती पदोन्नतीने केली जाते. महाराष्ट्र शासनाच्या विविध विभागांचे प्रमुख आयुक्त असताना दिसतात. उदाहरणार्थ :-
- महसूल विभागीय आयुक्त
- महसुल विभागीय उपआयुक्त
- आदिवासी विभागीय आयुक्त
- राज्य परिवहन आयुक्त
- राज्य पशुसंवर्धन आयुक्त
- राज्य शिक्षण आयुक्त
- राज्य कृषी आयुक्त
- राज्य महिला व बालविकास आयुक्त
- विभागीय उपआयुक्त (बालकल्याण)
