Bees are winged insects closely related to wasps and ants, known for their roles in pollination and, in the case of the best-known bee species, the western honey bee, for producing honey. Bees are a monophyletic lineage within the superfamily Apoidea. They are currently considered a clade, called Anthophila. There are over 20,000 known species of bees in seven recognized biological families. Some species – including honey bees, bumblebees, and stingless bees – live socially in colonies while most species (>90%) – including mason bees, carpenter bees, leafcutter bees, and sweat bees – are solitary.

കടന്നലുകളോടും ഉറുമ്പുകളോടും സാദൃശ്യമുള്ള പറക്കുന്ന ഒരു തരം ഷഡ്പദങ്ങളെയാണ് ബീ എന്നുവിളിക്കുന്നത്. ഇവയെ അന്തോഫില എന്ന സീരീസിലാണ് വർഗ്ഗീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. പരാഗണം, തേനുൽപ്പാദനം, എന്നിവയാണ് ഈ വിഭാഗത്തിൽ പെടുന്ന തേനീച്ചകളുടെ പ്രശസ്തിക്ക് കാരണം. 20,000 ഇനങ്ങൾ ഈ വിഭാഗത്തിലുണ്ട്. ഏഴു മുതൽ ഒൻപതുവരെ കുടുംബങ്ങൾ ഈ വിഭാഗത്തിലുള്ളതായാണ് കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ ഇതിലും വളരെക്കൂടുതൽ ഇനങ്ങൾ ഈ വിഭാഗത്തിലുണ്ടായിരിക്കും. അന്റാർട്ടിക്ക ഒഴികെ എല്ലാ ഭൂഖണ്ഡങ്ങളിലും ഇവ കാണപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്.
