Amphibians are ectothermic, anamniotic, four-limbed vertebrate animals that constitute the class Amphibia. In its broadest sense, it is a paraphyletic group encompassing all tetrapods, excluding the amniotes. All extant (living) amphibians belong to the monophyletic subclass Lissamphibia, with three living orders: Anura (frogs), Urodela (salamanders), and Gymnophiona (caecilians). Evolved to be mostly semiaquatic, amphibians have adapted to inhabit a wide variety of habitats, with most species living in freshwater, wetland or terrestrial ecosystems. Their life cycle typically starts out as aquatic larvae with gills known as tadpoles, but some species have developed behavioural adaptations to bypass this.

उभयचर कशेरूकी प्राणियों का एक बहुत महत्त्वपूर्ण वर्ग है जो जीववैज्ञानिक वर्गीकरण के अनुसार मत्स्य और सरीसृप वर्गों के बीच की श्रेणी में आता है। उभयचर जल तथा स्थल दोनों में रह सकते हैं। इनमें अधिकांश में दो जोड़ी पैर होते हैं। शरीर शिर तथा धड़ में विभाजित होता है। कुछ में पुच्छ उपस्थित होती है। उभयचर को त्वचा आर्द्र और शल्क रहित होती है नेत्र पलक बाते होते हैं। बाह्य कर्ण की जगह कर्णपटह पाया जाता है। आहार नाल, मूत्राशय तथा जनन पथ एक को में खुलते हैं जिसे अवस्कर कहते हैं और जो बाहर खुलता है। श्वसन क्लोम, फुप्फुस तथा त्वचा के द्वारा होता है। हृदय तीन प्रकोष्ठों का बना होता है से असमतापी जीव है। नर तथा मादा भिन्न होते हैं। निषेचन बाह्य होता है। ये अण्डोत्सर्जन करते हैं तथा विकास परिवर्धन प्रत्यक्ष अथवा डिम्भ के द्वारा होता है।
