পানি হলো একটি অজৈব, স্বচ্ছ, স্বাদহীন, গন্ধহীন এবং প্রায় বর্ণহীন এক রাসায়নিক পদার্থ, যা পৃথিবীর বারিমণ্ডলের ও যে কোন জীব-কোষ বা উদ্ভিদ-কোষের একটি প্রধান উপাদান। যদিও পানি কোন প্রাণী বা উদ্ভিদকে কোন রকমের শক্তির বা জৈব পরিপোষকের যোগান দেয় না, তবু এখনও পর্যন্ত আমরা যা জানি, তাতে সমস্ত ধরনের প্রাণের বেঁচে থাকার জন্য পানি অপরিহার্য। এই জন্য মহাকাশ বিজ্ঞানীরা বহির্বিশ্বে প্রাণের অস্তিত্ব খোঁজার আগে প্রথমে সেখানে পানির অস্তিত্ব খোঁজেন। কারণ, এখনও মোটামুটিভাবে মনে করা হয় যে, পানি যদি না থাকে, তাহলে সেখানে প্রাণ থাকতে পারে না।

Water is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula H₂O.
