Discrimination is the process of making unfair or prejudicial distinctions between people based on the groups, classes, or other categories to which they belong or are perceived to belong, such as race, gender, age, religion, physical attractiveness or sexual orientation. Discrimination typically leads to groups being unfairly treated on the basis of perceived statuses based on ethnic, racial, gender or religious categories. It involves depriving members of one group of opportunities or privileges that are available to members of another group.

বৈষম্য বলতে মানুষের মধ্যে এমন পার্থক্যকরণকে বোঝানো হয় যা তার গোষ্ঠী, শ্রেণী বা অন্যান্য ক্যাটাগরির উপর ভিত্তি করে করা হয়। জাতি, লিঙ্গ, বয়স, ধর্ম, অক্ষমতা সেইসাথে অন্যান্য ক্যাটাগরির ভিত্তিতে মানুষ বৈষম্যের শিকার হতে পারে। বৈষম্য বিশেষত তখনই ঘটে যখন ব্যক্তিবিশেষ বা গোষ্ঠীবিশেষের সাথে নির্দিষ্ট গোষ্ঠী বা সামাজিক বিভাগে তাদের প্রকৃত বা অনুভূত সদস্যতার ভিত্তিতে এমন অন্যায়ভাবে আচরণ করা হয় যা অন্য লোকেদের তুলনায় খারাপ আচরণ হিসেবে প্রতীয়মান হয়। এর মধ্যে অন্তর্ভুক্ত রয়েছে নির্দিষ্ট গোষ্ঠীর সদস্যদেরকে অন্য গ্রুপের সদস্যদের জন্য উপলব্ধ সুযোগ বা বিশেষাধিকার থেকে সীমাবদ্ধ করা।
