জলবায়ু (climate) : কোনো নির্দিষ্ট স্থানের সুদীর্ঘ সময়ের, সাধারণত ৩০-৩৫ বছরের আবহাওয়ার গড় বা সামগ্রিক অবস্থার হিসাবকে জলবায়ু বলে। সাধারণত বৃহৎ এলাকাজুড়ে জলবায়ু নির্ণীত হয়ে থাকে। জলবায়ুর পরিবর্তন আবহাওয়ার পরিবর্তনের উপর নির্ভরশীল। কোনো স্থানের আবহাওয়ার পরিবর্তন একটি স্বাভাবিক ঘটনা। আবহাওয়ার এ পরিবর্তন সাধারণত ঐ স্থানের তাপমাত্রা, আর্দ্রতা, বৃষ্টিপাতের পরিমাণ প্রভৃতি দ্বারা নিয়ন্ত্রিত হয়। আর কোনো স্থানের আবহাওয়ার উপাদানগুলোর স্থায়ী পরিবর্তন হলো জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন। কোনো স্থানের জলবায়ু হঠাৎ পরিবর্তিত হয় না। জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন একটি ধীর ও চলমান প্রক্রিয়া। বাংলাদেশের জলবায়ু মোটামুটি উষ্ণ, আর্দ্র ও সমভাবাপন্ন। মৌসুমি বায়ুর প্রভাব এখানে এত অধিক যে, এ জলবায়ু 'ক্রান্তীয় মৌসুমি জলবায়ু' নামে পরিচিত।

Climate is the long-term weather pattern in a region, typically averaged over 30 years. More rigorously, it is the mean and variability of meteorological variables over a time spanning from months to millions of years. Some of the meteorological variables that are commonly measured are temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, and precipitation. In a broader sense, climate is the state of the components of the climate system, including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere and biosphere and the interactions between them. The climate of a location is affected by its latitude, longitude, terrain, altitude, land use and nearby water bodies and their currents.
