Gender includes the social, psychological, cultural and behavioral aspects of being a man, woman, or other gender identity. Depending on the context, this may include sex-based social structures and gender expression. Most cultures use a gender binary, in which gender is divided into two categories, and people are considered part of one or the other ; those who are outside these groups may fall under the umbrella term non-binary. A number of societies have specific genders besides "man" and "woman," such as the hijras of South Asia; these are often referred to as third genders. Most scholars agree that gender is a central characteristic for social organization.

সামাজিক লিঙ্গ বা জেন্ডার হল নারীত্ব ও পুরুষত্ব সংক্রান্ত ও এদের মধ্যস্থিত পার্থক্যকারী বৈশিষ্ট্যসমুহের সীমা। বিভিন্ন প্রাসঙ্গিক দৃষ্টিকোণের উপর ভিত্তি করে উক্ত বৈশিষ্ট্যগুলোতে জৈবিক লিঙ্গ, যৌনতা-ভিত্তিক সামাজিক কাঠামো বা লিঙ্গ পরিচয় অন্তর্ভুক্ত থাকতে পারে। ঐতিহ্যগতভাবে, যে সকল লোক মানুষকে পুরুষ বা নারী হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করে অথবা পুরুষ বা স্ত্রী লিঙ্গের সর্বনাম ব্যবহার করে তারা সাধারণত লিঙ্গ দ্বৈততার একটি পদ্ধতি ব্যবহার করে থাকে, আর যারা এ সকল শ্রেণীর বাইরে থাকে তাদের জন্য অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক বিস্তৃত পরিভাষা হিসেবে অদ্বৈত (নন-বাইনারি) বা অ-বিষমকামী নামক পরিভাষা ব্যবহার করা হয়। কিছু সংস্কৃতিতে নির্দিষ্ট কিছু লিঙ্গ ভূমিকা আছে, যেগুলো নারী কিংবা পুরুষ হতে আলাদা, যেমন দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার হিজড়া জনগোষ্ঠী। এদেরকে প্রায়শই তৃতীয় লিঙ্গ হিসেবে নির্দেশ করা হয়।
