சிங்கம் (cinkam) - Meaning in English

சிங்கம் என்பது பாலூட்டி வகையைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு காட்டு விலங்கு ஆகும். இவ்விலங்கு ஊன் உண்ணும் விலங்கு வகையைச் சேர்ந்தது. தமிழில் ஆண் சிங்கத்திற்கு அரிமா என்ற பெயருண்டு. குற்றாலக் குறவஞ்சியில் ஆளி என்ற சொல்லையும் அரிமாக்களைக் குறிக்க ஆசிரியர் பயன்படுத்தியுள்ளார். ஏறுகளின் கழுத்தில் பிடரி இருப்பது சிறப்பாகும். பிடரியை உளை என்றும் உளை மயிர் என்றும் கூறுவதுண்டு. சிங்கமானது பூனைப் பேரினத்தைச் சேர்ந்தது. பூனைப் பேரினத்திலேயே, புலிக்கு அடுத்தாற்போல இருக்கும் பெரிய விலங்கு. ஆண் சிங்கம் 150-250 கிலோ வரை எடை கொண்டதாக இருக்கும். பெண் சிங்கம் 120-150 கிலோ கிராம் எடை கொண்டதாக இருக்கும். இவ்விலங்கு இன்று ஆப்பிரிக்காவிலும் இந்தியாவிலும் உள்ள காடுகளில் மட்டுமே காணப்படுகின்றது.

It is sexually dimorphic; adult male lions are larger than females and have a prominent mane. It is a social species, forming groups called prides. A lion's pride consists of a few adult males, related females, and cubs. Groups of female lions usually hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The lion is an apex and keystone predator; although some lions scavenge when opportunities occur and have been known to hunt humans, lions typically do not actively seek out and prey on humans.
