तमिल (तमिळ)एक मानव प्रजातीय मूल है, जिनका मुख्य निवास भारत के तमिलनाडु तथा उत्तरी श्रीलंका में है। तमिल समुदाय से जुड़ी चीजों को भी तमिल कहते हैं जैसे, तमिल तथा तमिलनाडु के वासियों को भी तमिल कहा जाता है। तामिल, द्रविड़ जाति की ही एक शाखा है।

The Tamil people, also known as Tamilar, Thamilan for men and Thamilachi for women, or simply Tamils, are a Dravidian ethnolinguistic group who natively speak the Tamil language and trace their ancestry mainly to India's southern state of Tamil Nadu, to the union territory of Puducherry, and to Sri Lanka. The Tamil language is one of the world's longest-surviving classical languages, with over 2000 years of Tamil literature, including the Sangam poems, which were composed between 300 BCE and 300 CE. People who speak Tamil as their mother tongue and are born in Tamil clans are considered Tamils.
