ਲੌਂਗ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਲੋਵ (clove) ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਲੈਟਿਨ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕਲੈਵਸ (clavus) ਤੋਂ ਨਿਕਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਕਿੱਲ ਜਾਂ ਕੰਡੇ ਦਾ ਬੋਧ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਲੌਂਗ ਦਾ ਅਕਾਰ ਵੀ ਸਗਵੀਂ ਹੈ। ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਲੌਂਗ ਦਾ ਲੈਟਿਨ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਪਰ (Piper) ਸੰਸਕ੍ਰਿਤ/ਮਲਿਆਲਮ/ਤਾਮਿਲ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਪਲਿ ਤੋਂ ਆਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।

They are native to the Maluku Islands, or Moluccas, in Indonesia, and are commonly used as a spice, flavoring, or fragrance in consumer products, such as toothpaste, soaps, or cosmetics. Cloves are available throughout the year owing to different harvest seasons across various countries.
